Esta década es la favorita de muchos, donde su mayor ventaja fue que en aquella época empezó a darse el fenómeno de la globalización, impulsado por los medios de comunicación, especialmente la televisión. Los conciertos en directo, programas exclusivos de música, la moda y los vídeos musicales (el cual muchos de ellos ya se han convertido en clásicos), jugaron un papel importante para que muchos recuerden con nostalgia la música de los '80s.
El último gran genero de la música moderna, con un estilo muy distintivo fue el Hip Hop (Old school hip hop, Golden age hip hop) donde en los '80s empezó a popularizarse siendo su gran apoyo, la música electrónica, que surgió de las variantes que dejo la música disco. Synthpop, Post-disco, New Wave, el cual en este ultimo fue un complemento tanto para el Rock y Pop. El Heavy Metal empezó a ganarse un publico 'underground' aunque muchas Compañías discográficas querían hacer de él algo comercial, el cual se le denomino ''Glam metal''. El Hard rock, Power pop, y el rock alternativo que se asocio mucho a la música independiente (Indie rock) empezaba a surgir.
La música de los 80's en latinoamérica fue el ''Boom'' de la música internacional, te lo digo porque las personas que vivieron su juventud en aquella época casi siempre me dicen que fue la mejor década de la música; eso ya es un Cliché:). Por mi parte es muy debatible pero no se puede negar la gran influencia que tuvo.
